Natural stone pool decks that stay cool, grip wet feet, and outlast concrete.
The best pool deck stone stays cool underfoot in direct sun, resists slip when wet, tolerates chlorine and salt systems, and holds up through hundreds of freeze-thaw cycles. Travertine and shellstone lead the category — tumbled finishes add texture for grip; thermal finishes reflect heat.

Natural stone Pool Deck — expert answers
How to Install Natural Stone Pool Coping & Deck
A complete guide to installing travertine or limestone around a swimming pool, from substrate preparation to grouting and sealing.
Prepare the substrate
Ensure the concrete or mortar bed is flat, cured, and sloped ¼" per foot away from the pool. Use a 3,000 psi concrete base minimum. Check for cracking or movement and repair before setting stone.
Select and acclimate the stone
Order 10% overage to account for cuts and breakage. Inspect all pieces for consistent color and thickness. Let the stone acclimate to ambient temperature for 24 hours.
Apply bond coat and set stone
Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar rated for wet/exterior use (ANSI A118.4). Comb with a ½" notched trowel. Back-butter each stone piece. Maintain 1/8"–3/16" grout joints.
Install coping pieces first
Set coping (bullnose or drop-face edge pieces) along the pool bond beam with a slight outward pitch for drainage. Use a 100% silicone joint at the pool-to-coping junction — never rigid grout, which will crack as the pool moves.
Grout and clean
Use a sanded grout for joints over 1/8". For travertine, use matching grout to fill natural voids. Clean excess grout within 30 minutes with a damp sponge. Allow 72 hours cure before foot traffic.
Seal the installation
Apply a penetrating impregnating sealer to dry, clean stone. Work in shaded conditions. Allow sealer to absorb for 10 minutes, wipe excess, and let cure 24 hours before water contact.
